Meet The Team
Let our passion be your motivation
We are a highly dedicated and knowledgeable team who take pride in getting to know you
Ian Stringer – Owner/Director
As a young man, I joined the British Army and became a very active member of the sporting scene.
I came into contact with instructors and coaches who had a fantastic view of training and through their dedication and professionalism, I became inspired to experience a variety of sports which included, cross country skiing, running, rugby and athletics in which I won several gold medals in the 400 meters. I boxed in two different weight categories winning championships in both middle and light heavy weight. Over two consecutive years I took part in the British Army on the Rhine decathlon, 3 man team event, and we came second in both of them.
After leaving the British Army I returned to a sport which I started at 15 whilst living on the Isles of Scilly, Cornish Pilot Gig Racing, which has seen a huge increase in competitors in recent years. During my time in this sport, I have attained four World Championship titles. The rowers today are more professional in their attitude to training, and train throughout the year – it is in the winter months that I now provide training for Gig Clubs in their “off season preparation”, some of whom have consistently come in the top three places over the last eight years of competition.
Not long after leaving the Army I returned to full time education at Exeter, to study Sports Therapy and after twelve months, qualified as a personal trainer with the International Institute of Sports Therapists, also acquiring my British Amateur Weight Lifting award.
I then worked as an instructor and manager at local gyms and health clubs in Cornwall, where I have built up my experience as a personal trainer and sports therapist.
It was in 2004 that I created Fitness-Matters personal training and the business has grown and became an established one. It seemed only a natural progression to open Stringer’s Gym, where I could offer a high quality service, working with a team who had the same strong desire to teach and provide a professional, personal service to our client base. I feel very privileged to be able to work within such a team.
Aaron Gates – Personal Trainer/Strength Conditioning Coach
I have always had a passion for sport and exercise and have been involved in all forms of sport from a young age.
This led me to study Sport and Exercise Sciences at Loughborough University where I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in 2009 and a further MSc in 2010. Whilst studying at Loughborough, I balanced my studies with another passion of mine, rowing. I have won several county championships in recent years as well as being the Senior Men’s Captain of Loughborough Students Rowing Club.
After graduating from Loughborough in 2010 I worked at Plymouth Albion where I was involved in developing a plyometric programme for the players as well as supervising rehabilitation sessions with injured players. I have 5 years rowing coaching experience, to a wide variety of rowers, from junior rowers, to novice rowers, up to elite level rowers.

Outside the gym, I enjoy surfing and spending time on the beach with friends.
I’ve been involved in sports and training from a young age starting with swimming and martial arts. I got serious about my training at the age of 15 when I started competing in boxing. The one on one nature of the sport and the attitude of having no one to blame but yourself for any failures really appealed to me. I boxed all over the country representing Cornwall and won several southwest and western counties titles. Since then I have branched out in to many forms of combat sports including muay thai and Brazilian jiu jitsu. I’m happy that my career can involve so many things that I’m passionate about and I’m looking forward to progressing here at Stringer’s. In my spare time I love surfing and snowboarding.
My qualifications are as follows:
Amateur boxing association assistant coach
Nvq level 2 gym instructing
Nvq level 3 in personal training
My interest in fitness started with karate. I made it to purple belt until I moved to the Philippines during my high school studies. Here I joined a basketball team for the school for 3 years until I moved back to England.
I found my true passion in weight training when I visited a gym as a guest and got hooked.
In 2013 I decided to take a personal training course and started working at a Fitness4Less branch in London where I have worked with many clients one on one and in groups helping them achieve their goals and to enjoy every aspect of training.
Here at Stringer’s I particularly enjoy delivering my “off the bike” spinning classes.
